Icecast and Bass

This tutorial describes how to setup an Icecast server and broadcast audio from vvvv.

Note: I'll add some screenshots later, to help for the setup.

Install Icecast

Installing icecast is pretty straightforward. Just download the latest release and install from here:

Configure Icecast

Once you installed icecast, go to the configuration menu, then choose "edit configuration".

Choose the password that you want for administration, then start the server.

Setup the vvvv Node

Once your server is running, just create a Icecast (Bass) node, then set the following pins:

• Handle: The audio stream to output to icecast.
• Host: the machine where the icecast server is running.
• Port: the server port (default is 8000).
• Password: the one you did setup in the server previously.
• Bit Rate: The output bit rate (64 or 32 kbps is a good value).
• Mount point: The internal stream name on the server.
• Station name, description, genre: Details about what you are playing.
• Song Title/URL: Song details.
• Is active: Tells if you broadcast or not.

Please note that only song title/url can be changed directly. Other pins updates will reset the connection.

Listening

Open a broser at the URL:
http://servername:port

From there you will see a stream list. Click on the stream and open with a media player to listen to it (Winamp will do).

Notes

Encoding is done in ogg format, so your player needs to support ogg.

mp3 will maybe be supported later, but as lame encoder doesn't support floating point samples, will need to wait for it.
