What is The Fool Proof LJ System system?

  • -file missing-- align=center}

The Fool Proof LJ System is a Light Jockey system that is build so any fool can operate it.

In small Clubs, Disco's and Dancing's the DJ is also the same person that controls the lights. The DJ does not have time to use the light controller, so most off the time, the lights will do the same chase over and over. And one expensive light controller get's totaly ignored.

  • With the Fool Proof LJ System, there are a few buttons, made on a panel, that will start something special ones the DJ bangs on the button. Things like the Stroboscoop, Smoke Machine or a different Chase can be triggered this way.
  • The special will only last for a pre-defined length off time, or until the DJ presses the same button again, or some other button that uses the same lights is pressed.
  • After the special is finished, or stopped, the basic light settings will take over.
  • This will allow the DJ easy fool-proof control over the lights, without knowing anything behind the technique behind it.

What are you going to build with VVVV?

  • -file missing-- align=center}

Well, abviously, I am going to build a Fool Proof LJ System myself, based on VVVV. I want to implement a few special and nice features.

  • Create a simple users interface with only the essential buttons displayed.
  • Ouput the interface on a second screen, vvvv_33beta9 supports a dualscreen screen set up.
  • Control the interface by touchscreen, and MIDI buttons, vvvv has great MIDI support.
  • Make easy to change chases for the LED lights and dimmer lights.
  • Trigger the steps of the chases by audio-input, music, that is created by the DJ.
  • Control all the lights using the DMX protocol.

What hardware are you going to use?

  • -file missing-- align=center}
  • PC, windows based, dualscreen support, audio-in and MIDI support.
  • 15 inch TFT chasis touchscreen, running 3m touchware software makes the screen react just like using the mouse. I bought two off them for very cheap a few years ago.
  • For the MIDI input I am using a Doepfer CTM64 contact to MIDI interface. I still have to make a nice board with all the buttons.
  • Entec USB-DMX Dongle, this is not suported by vvvv (yet) but with the artnet reciever, hippy's SoftNode 1.2.0, running on a second PC I am able to send out DMX to my lights.
  • The DMX fixtures (aka lights) I currently use for testing are a conventional 4 channel dimmer bar with 4 good old fashion par-64 lights connected to it, and 2 LED par-56 RGB spots.
